School Events & Services

The Hobbitts curriculum is enhanced by providing the children with opportunities to step out of the classroom into the community, and  inviting the community into Hobbitts.  Children might not ordinarily have the chance to take a ride on a hay wagon or jump on a trampoline.  The world is opened up to them as community workers enter Hobbitts.  The importance of family is also recognized by honoring our mothers and our fathers during special events.

Field Trips and Events
  • Hobbitts offers a number of off-site field trips.  Trips to Luther Farm, Hillside Orchard, Gymnastics World, Heinen's Supermarket, and programs through the Cuyahoga Valley Education Center are enjoyed by the children.
  • In addition to off-site field trips, Hobbitts offers many on-site events.  Special visitors such as the Richfield Fire Departments, and the Richfield librarian pay us a visit each year.  The Bubble Lady, Outback Ray, the Richfield Art Studio, the McCulloch School of Irish Dance, the African Drumming Duo from the University of Akron, the Illusion Factory, and Lake Erie Puppet Theater have also visited Hobbitts Preschool.

Classroom Specials
  • Children will enjoy holiday parties, and the end-of-the-year picnic at the Brecksville Community Center’s playground.

Speech Screenings / Speech-Language Services
  • The Hobbitts Preschool currently offers speech screenings.  Speech-language services will be provided by Emily Carlin who brings with her a wealth of pediatric speech-language pathology experiences.

Conferences
  • Before the school year begins children and parents will have the opportunity to visit with the teacher.  This is a wonderful time for the child to get to know the teacher, the surroundings, and what he/she might expect when coming to school for the first time.  The parents will have a chance to spend some time talking with the teacher about their child and have questions answered about the program.
  • In January teachers will evaluate the children’s progress.  Parents will then meet with the teacher for a midyear conference.  Parents can always feel free to call or meet with the teacher throughout the year if they have any concerns about their child.

Parent Participation / Volunteering
  • Parents have the opportunity to volunteer both in and out of the classroom.  Opportunities available within the classroom include being a mystery reader, or volunteering to help the children with skills, crafts, or play games on a weekly basis from October through April.
  • Volunteer opportunities outside the classroom include helping on field trips, helping with fund raisers, such as The Hobbitts Election Day Bake Sale.   In addition, parents may act as our school librarian, make play dough for the classrooms, or help distribute our brochures to local libraries.
